There’s more to Bengali cuisine than Sandesh and mishti doi!

Bengali cuisine is home to the most diverse and lip-smacking dishes, ranging from sweet to savoury. The Godrej Food Trends Report 2022 forecasts a rise in the exploration of India’s regional cuisine. This month, as we celebrate the distinctness of India’s culinary identity, we’ve rounded up a host of Bengali treats that Bongs relish. We think you might too!

Maach

Delicacies such as bhapa ilish (steamed mustard hilsa), shorshe maach (fish cooked with mustard paste), and doi maach (fish cooked in Godrej Jersey Yoghurt), Gondhoraj Machh (fish with Gondharaj lime) are variations of the classic maach, that Bengalis savour deeply!  Several other seafood is also a crowd-favourite amongst Bengalis. For instance, Chingri macher batichochori (shrimp curry) or dhaab chingri (prawns with coconut milk) are some favoured delicacies.

Any of the curries mentioned above, enjoyed with a kichuri (referred to as kachori in other parts of the country) is a combo you will return to from time to time!

Shukto

Shukto is a creamy gravy/stew prepared with vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, raw banana, drumsticks, brinjals, raw papaya, and bitter gourd. The gravy is tempered with methi, ginger, and mustard!  Savour a steamy bowl of shukto with kichuri or warm rotis as the perfect rainy day meal.

Kochi panthar jhol

Kochi panther jhol is an elaborate mutton curry prepared with mutton marinated in turmeric, ginger-garlic and red chilli powder, and pressure cooked with fried potatoes. The dish is enlivened with the addition of pureed tomatoes and a host of spices!

Mochar ghonto

A banana plantain dry curry, this dish is prepared by pressure cooking chopped and marinated banana plantains, mixed with the classic mustard paste and served with a steaming bowl of rice!
