Chhath Puja, one of the revered festivals in Bihar and Jharkhand, is more than just a festival — it’s a celebration of gratitude, purity and devotion to the Sun God and Mother Earth. This season, bring the flavours of Bihar to your table with a traditional spread that captures the essence of the festival.

Thekua

This iconic sweet, prepared with wheat flour, jaggery and ghee, is a crunchy treat central to Chhath Puja.

Tip: Shape into floral designs to add a festive touch!

Rasiyaw (Rice Kheer)

Rasiyaw, a cherished Bihari delicacy, is an essential part of Chhath Puja offerings. This traditional rice kheer is sweetened with jaggery (or gur), adding a unique earthy flavour. Prepared similarly to regular kheer, Rasiyaw combines rice, water and milk, but its distinct sweetness from the jaggery gives it a rich, caramelised taste.

Tip: Pair this creamy dessert with crisp, savoury puris or soft, warm rotis.

Kaddu Bhaat

In some households, kaddu (pumpkin) replaces the more commonly used bottle gourd (lauki) for this special preparation. The dish is made savoury with the addition of sendha namak (Himalayan salt), which is considered pure and is used in religious fasting. This wholesome meal symbolises the start of the puja rituals and is made using fresh, pure ingredients, embodying the festival’s essence of purity and devotion.

Tip: Kaddu Bhaat is often served with steamed rice, giving a wholesome contrast of flavours.
