Mumbai’s mother-daughter duos serving food with heart

Meet the women whose kitchens are filled with stories, heritage and unforgettable flavours — all shared between mother and daughter

10 May 2025

What’s the first recipe your mother ever taught you? Was it the perfect tadka for dal, a melt-in-the-mouth mithai or that Sunday-special mutton curry, no restaurant can rival?
There’s something special about recipes passed down from mother to daughter. This Mother’s Day, we shine the spotlight on Mumbai’s three remarkable mother-daughter chef duos who are blending nostalgia, innovation and heritage in their kitchens to craft culinary legacies.

Here’s look at their food and stories – dishes that will not just inspire you to order but to step into the kitchen and cook together.

Monaz and Persis Irani

For Monaz Irani, founder and head chef of Plate & Pint in Mumbai, food was always in her DNA. Growing up around her parents’ Tulips Café and her mother Persis Irani’s bakery Delifresh, she gravitated towards the kitchen. After stints at IHM Mumbai, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and Le Cordon Bleu, London, Monaz launched Plate & Pint — a cosy Kemps Corner café in Mumbai known for its hearty portions and homely warmth.

Today, she runs both Plate & Pint and Delifresh alongside her mother. Monaz handles daily operations and menu creation, while Persis brings her perfectionist touch to presentation and service. Their signature dishes — like Doritos and Avocado Salad and Jalapeno Cheddar Poppers — reflect their shared love for comforting, satisfying food. The menu is a combination of breakfast staples such as waffles and pancakes. Other hostellers include bar food in the form of made-from-scratch pizzas, burgers sandwiches and pasta.

Shreenal and Rupal Badiani

What if you could eat a rose? That whimsical idea sparked Baked Bouquets in 2019, a unique venture by Mumbai’s mother-daughter duo Rupal and Shreenal Badiani. What began as a fun kitchen experiment soon blossomed into a thriving business. With Rupal’s three decades in event décor and Shreenal’s creative flair, Baked Bouquets offers gifts that are as memorable as they are delicious, redefining how Mumbai celebrates special moments.

Through trial and error, they mastered the art of piping cupcakes to look like roses, carnations and chrysanthemums. Today, Baked Bouquets has grown beyond cupcakes, offering macarons, cookie bouquets, tarts and fruit arrangements — all beautifully crafted to pair with fresh flowers in eye-catching designs.

Farida Nanavaty and Karishma

Farida Nanavaty and her daughter Karishma run Karrylicious Kitchen in Mumbai, serving traditional Parsi dishes made from their family’s 150-year-old recipes. The mother-daughter food journey that started in June 2020 began with a simple idea – sell chocolate walnut fudge, because Karishma’s friends and colleagues used to relish on it. Then within two weeks, they started getting orders for Parsi cuisine and that's how it all began.

Their menu ranges from classics like Salli Boti, Prawn Patio and Dhan Dar to global favourites like Veg Gratin and Cheese and Egg Cutlets. Despite being a small venture, they’ve built a loyal following for their homestyle, comforting food.
