How to sharpen your cake knife?

Cake knives are so beautiful, aren't they? They can be a gorgeous piece of metalware – long and elegant if you know how to sharpen them

29 Mar 2022

Cake knives are usually serrated. They have a saw-like edge with small teeth. Serrated blades self-sharpen as you use them, so they don't require regular maintenance like their smooth-blade counterparts.

However, if you notice that your cake knife has lost its sharpness or doesn't cut as well as it used to, you can bring it back to life. Before you start sharpening your knife, you need to prepare the following items:

1. Whetstone

This is a rectangular-shaped stone used to sharpen any steel blade. You can find it in hardware stores or any home improvement store.

2. Sandpaper

This is used for polishing your blade once it has been sharpened using the whetstone.

3. Water

It is essential to lubricate the whetstone with water each time you sharpen a blade to ensure it won't get damaged after several uses.

The worst thing you could do is spoil the impression by producing a cake with ripples in the fondant or crushed edges! Well, we have good news. Cake knives are quite easy to sharpen using a variety of techniques. Let's have a look:

Wipe the blade with a wire brush to remove any food that might be stuck during your last use.

Remove all dust, and dry the blade with a clean cloth.

Use a file or whetstone to sharpen the blade at a 20-degree angle (the same as your knife). Flip the knife over and repeat the process on the other side of the blade.

Test the sharpness of your knife by cutting through a piece of paper or cardboard. If it cuts clean, you're done!

Wipe off any metal shavings collected on its surface with a damp cloth.

Apply mineral oil to prevent rusting.

The best way to get the job done is by using a professional knife sharpener; however, if you don't have access to one or want to sharpen your knife at home, you can try the above methods.
