Healthy Snacks for Diwali

In Indian culture, Diwali is a celebration of feasting and togetherness. Diwali is also an excellent opportunity to introduce new foods to picky eaters.

21 Oct 2022

Diwali is here, and you know what that means — extra spicy, Indian home-cooked meals. While most people in India don't have a problem eating anything served on their plate during the festive season, some of us with more selective tastes might have to rely on unique Diwali dishes to get our fix.

Let's face it, bridging the gap between health-conscious eaters and Indian food is no easy task.

Whether you're planning to host Diwali dinner parties or help your kids celebrate this traditional Indian festival, you may be faced with a problem -- finding healthy new recipes. If you are looking for something different this year, here are some top Diwali specials for health-conscious individuals:

Flaxseed ladoos

These ladoos are made with flaxseed powder, jaggery and ghee. You can also add desiccated coconut or nuts for extra crunch and nutrition. The best thing about this recipe is that it's easy to make!

Ragi Sev

Ragi, or finger millet, is one of the most nutritious foods on earth. It is rich in iron and calcium and has a high protein content. It is a gluten-free grain used in place of rice or other grains. It has a nutty taste and texture, making it an excellent ingredient for baking and cooking. Ragi sev is prepared by soaking ragi in water for 4 hours, grinding to a smooth paste and then adding salt, jaggery, cardamom powder, ghee and oil. It is then baked.

Homemade protein bars

They are made with quinoa and chia seeds which provide the perfect balance of carbs and protein for energy. To make these protein bars at home, all you need is peanut butter, oats, honey, raisins and chia seeds. You can add some walnuts, almonds or pumpkin seeds if you want to up their nutritional value even more!

Soya sticks

These are basically a combination of soya flour, jaggery and ghee. The best way to make them is by making a dough with soya flour and water, adding jaggery and ghee while kneading the dough until it becomes smooth and soft. Then cut them into small pieces and bake them until they turn golden brown on both sides.

Oats chivda

Oats chivda is made with roasted oats mixed with jaggery, spices and peanuts. The best part is that it can be stored for long time so you can prepare it ahead of time and serve it during Diwali or any other occasion. It can be made using just oats and spices but if you want to make it more filling, add some peanuts or roasted gram (chana dal) to it. Chivda is basically the Indian version of trail mix but with a twist!
