JEE, NEET, Boards? Snack smart, study smarter! Ace your exams with smart and healthy snacking
Chef Amrita Raichand shares her tips to balance nutrition and studies
As another exam season approaches, students across India will find themselves immersed in their books, often pushing their limits to perform their best. Amid this hectic schedule, one crucial factor often gets neglected: nutrition. Eating right is as important as studying for exams, as proper nutrition can improve focus, boost energy and help maintain cognitive function throughout the long hours of study.
Interestingly, snacking has emerged as a preferred way for students to stay fueled during study sessions. From the research driven narrative by Vikhroli Cucina, STTEM 2.0 India's Frozen Snacking Report by Godrej Yummiez, 21% of respondents identified studying or exam preparation as the perfect time to enjoy snacks. This trend is even more prominent among the younger age group of 18-25 years, where 27% of individuals reported a preference for snacking during such moments, compared to the 18% average of other age groups.
Balanced meals on busy days
When study schedules intensify, eating right can feel like an added task, but it’s essential for sustained focus. A balanced diet doesn't have to be complicated. Aim to include whole grains, lean proteins and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your meals. These foods not only provide essential vitamins and minerals but also help stabilize energy levels and concentration. Preparing meals ahead of time, even if it's just chopping vegetables or cooking a batch of rice, can save precious minutes in the day while ensuring you’re getting the nutrition your body and mind need.
Quick and wholesome snacking
Snacking can be a great way to keep energy levels up, but it’s important to choose wisely. Rather than reaching for chips or sugary treats, think of snacks that combine taste and nutrition. For example, a green peas paratha is a perfect study companion — packed with protein and fibre, it's an ideal way to stave off hunger while boosting your energy for hours. When you need something quick and easy, frozen snacks like protein-packed chicken nuggets are an excellent option. They're delicious, require minimal preparation and can be a lifesaver during busy study sessions.
Interestingly, the report highlights regional preferences as well — Ahmedabad led the way with 33% of respondents showing a preference for frozen snacks during studies, followed by Bangalore at 29%. These insights reflect how convenient snacking options are gaining popularity across different cities.
Hydration is ey
Often overlooked, hydration plays a vital role in keeping both your body and mind sharp. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and a lack of focus, which isn’t ideal when you're preparing for exams. Keep a water bottle by your side and sip throughout the day. For an extra kick, try coconut water, Jersey Badam Milk or homemade lemonade — it’s hydrating and refreshing, giving you a boost of energy without the sugar.
Smart snacking strategies
When hunger strikes, smart snacking can make a world of difference. Try sprouts chaat — a delicious mix of fresh sprouts, onions, tomatoes and spices. This crunchy and flavourful snack is nutrient-dense and will provide long-lasting energy. For those of you who are trying to save time and nourish yourself at the same time, there is nothing like frozen vegetables; All you got to do is boil, butter, added all mix spice and munch on Godrej Yummiez Mixed Vegetable.
A handful of almonds, walnuts and dried fruits is another excellent choice. It’s easy to put together, and the healthy fats and proteins will keep you full and energized. For those moments when you need something quick, frozen snacks like cheese corn nuggets or crispy veg sticks can be a healthy and convenient option, offering the comfort of a tasty treat without the guilt. The India's Frozen Snacking Report also reveals that single consumers showed a higher preference for frozen snacks, with 26% opting for them during study or exam prep.
Another great way to beat the heat and snack smart is by making your own frozen fruit pops. Simply blend your favourite fruits with a bit of yoghurt, freeze them in moulds, and you’ve got a refreshing, nutritious treat to keep you going.
Time management and healthy eating:
Balancing studying with eating well requires some planning. Batch cooking or prepping your meals in advance can help save time during hectic days. If you can, consider making use of healthy frozen snacks or meals to keep nutritious options on hand without taking too much time away from your study schedule. Healthy eating doesn't have to be time-consuming —it’s about making smart choices that keep you on track without compromising your focus.
By following these tips and incorporating smart snacking strategies into your routine, you’ll ensure your body and mind are equipped to handle long study hours. With proper nutrition, you’ll be able to power through your exams with focus, energy, and a positive attitude.
Remember, nourishing your body is just as important as nourishing your mind — both are needed to perform your best.
